Graphing Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Box Plot A graph that shows how data are distributed by using the median, quartiles, least value and greatest value.
Dot Plot A visual display in which each piece of data is represented by a dot above the number line
Average The sum of the items in a set of data divided by the number of items in the set.
Mean The sum of the items in a set of data divided by the number of items in the set.
Categorical data Data that consists of non numeric information.
Cluster A group of data points close together on a dot plot
Measure of Center A single number used to describe a set of numeric data. (Mean and Median
Median The middle number or the average of the 2 middle numbers in an ordered set of data.
Mode The number or numbers that occur most frequently in a set of data.
Lower Quartile The median of the lower half of the data
Upper Quartile The median of the upper half of the data.
Measure of Spread A single number that describes the spread of the data. Range and Mode.
Interquartile Range (IQR) Difference of the upper quartile and lower quartile.
Range Difference of the greatest value and the least value in a set of data.
Outlier Data values that are either much greater or much less than the other data values.
Stem and Leaf Pot A display of data in which digits with larger place values are named as stems and digits with smaller place values are named as leaves.
Categorical Data Data from observations that can be sorted into groups or categories.
Relative Frequency The ratio of the frequency to the sum of the frequencies for all categories. Usually written as a fraction or percent.
Histogram A graph that uses bars to show the frequency of data within equal intervals.
Skewed Distribution Describes the shape of data that is pulled in one direction away from the center in a tail on the left or right. Has an outlier
Statistical Question A question that anticipates variability in the answer.
Variability Measures of much the data points will differ or vary from each other.
Peak The maximum frequency of a data set.
Uniform Distribution Describes the shape when the values of the data set are equally spread across the range.
Symmetrical Distribution Describes a set of data in which the shape of the left side is roughly the same shape as the right side.
