Year 7 language devices
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Metaphor | Describing someone or something in a way that isn't literally true, but helps make a comparison or suggest a resemblance. E.g His heart was a rock. |
| Simile | A comparison often using 'like' or 'as' that shows similarities between two very different things. E.g. She had hair like a spider's web |
| Imagery | Descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the five senses (taste, smell, touch, sight, sound). E.g. He ran his tongue over his dry, cracked lips and tasted the salty tang of the ocean. |
| Personification | Giving human-like qualities or characteristics to something non-human. E.g. The tree branches whispered quietly. |
| Vivid verbs | Verbs that are more interesting and specific than commonly used options, helping the reader clearly visualise what characters are doing/thinking and reducing the need for adverbs. E.g. 'Sprinted' or 'dashed' instead of 'ran' |
| Dialogue | The words said aloud by characters, shown through the use of quotation marks. E.g. "Hey, Amy," I called, "have you seen my school bag?" |
| Onomatopoeia | A word that imitates or mimics the sound it is describing. E.g Leaves CRUNCHED under her feet as she darted away from the BUZZ of mosquitoes. |
| Alliteration | When a number of words with the same first consonant sound occur close together. E.g. I dive into the deep, dark water and feel it drag me under. |
| Exaggeration | A statement that goes beyond the truth to represent something as better or worse than it really is. E.g. These shoes are killing me! |
