Vocab WordsDefinition
Columns On a display screen in character mode, a column is a vertical line of characters extending from the top to the bottom of the screen. The size of a text display is usually measured in rows and columns.
Hyphenation Hyphenation is the use of a hyphen to break up a word when it reaches the edge of a document or container.
Landscape orienation Landscape mode is a horizontal orientation of a document or image.
Margins Margins are the blank spaces that line the top, bottom, and left and right sides of a document.
Non-breaking spaces Non-breaking spaces, also known as no-break, non-breakable, hard or fixed spaces, are characters that look exactly like regular spaces.
Orphan Orphan. A paragraph-opening line that appears by itself at the bottom of a page or column, thus separated from the rest of the text. ... Alternately, A word, part of a word, or very short line that appears by itself at the end of a paragraph.
Page break Page breaks are used to end a page without filling it with text.
Portrait orienation By default, a document uses portrait orientation, because most documents are primarily text, and text works well in this vertical format.
Section break Section breaks are used to divide the document into sections.
Widow Widows and Orphans are the terms referring to lines left on their own either at the beginning or end of the page of a multi-page document.
