QuestionAnswer
imagery creating a picture by writing to one or more of the five senses
simile compares two things using either "like" or "as"
metaphor compares two things without using like or as (hint:sometimes is/was)
personification figurative language in which an idea, object, or animal is given the characteristics of a person
onomatopoeia use of a word whose sound makes you think of its meaning (hint: whoosh)
alliteration the repeating of beginning consonant sounds
hyperbole exaggeration or overstatement for emphasis
irony using a word, phrase, or idea to mean the exact opposite
allusion a reference to a well-known person, place, thing, or event
repetition the repeating of a word or phrase to emphasize an idea
