| Term | Definition |

| constant | a number on its own |
| coefficient | the number used to multiply a variable |
| sum | the result of adding two or more quantities |
| product | the result of multiplying two or more quantities |
| quotient | the result of dividing two or more quantities |
| difference | the result of subtracting two or more quantities |
| term | a single number, a variable, or a number and a variable multiplied together. 3y -6 (3y and 6 ) |
| factor | a number that when multiplied with another produces a given number or expression (2 x 3 x 7 = 42; 2, 3, and 7) |
| addend | a number which is added to another. 2 + 2 = 4 (2 and 2 ) |
| operator | A symbol (such as +, −, ×, etc.) that shows an operation |
| variable | a number or symbol that stands for an unknown quantity |
| expression | a mathematical phrase that contains numbers, variables, and/or operators (2+2) |
| equation | a number sentence that contains an equal sign, showing that two expressions are equal |
| numerical expression | an expression that contains numbers and operators |
| algebraic expression | an expression that contains a variable(s) |
| base | the number that is multiplied by itself when it is raised to a certain power. |
| exponent | a number that shows how many times the base is used as a factor |
