Government Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Autocracy | Form of government where one person holds absolute power. Citizens do not participate much if at all. |
| Absolute Monarchy | Government where the king or queen is the head of state and holds all political power over the citizens |
| Democracy | Form of government where the citizens participate the most by voting for their leadership |
| Presidential Democracy | Citizens directly elect the country’s leader Head of the government is not a member of the legislature |
| Parliamentary Democracy | Type of Democracy where the citizens participate by voting for their Legislature. The Legislature selects their Prime Minister. |
| Legislature | Branch of government that makes the laws. |
| Executive | Branch of government that enforces the laws |
| Prime Minister | Title of the leader of a Parliamentary Democracy |
| President | Title of the leader of a Presidential Democracy. |
| Dictatorship | Government where the ruler has absolute power and authority |
| Communism | Government makes all political, economic, and social decisions within a country Government owns all businesses and farms |
| Constitutional Monarchy | Government where a king or queen is the head of state but has little political power Power is limited by a constitution |
| Representative Democracy | Democratic form of government where citizens elect leaders to make decisions on their behalf |
| Head of Government (Chief Executive) | Leader with the power to take care of the people (usually leads the military and makes the decisions) |
| Head of State | Leader who represents the State (the people and the land). |
| Republic | Type of Government where decisions are made by elected officials who represent the citizens |
| Unicameral | One house of a legislature/parliament |
| Bicameral | Two houses of a legislature/parliament |
| Government | A System with the power to make, enforce, and interpret laws - in charge of taking care of the people. There are different forms of this system (ex. Autocracy, Democracy, etc.). |
| State (or Country) | Group of people who have legitimate and ultimate authority over the land they live in. |
