Gaming Terms

TermDefinition
action a thing done; an act
anime a style of Japanese film and television animation, typically aimed at adults as well as children.
assets a useful or valuable thing, person, or quality.
console A video game console is an electronic or computer device that outputs a video signal or visual image to display a video game that one or more people can play through some type of game controller.
cut scene A cutscene or event scene (sometimes in-game cinematic or in-game movie) is a sequence in a video game that is not interactive, breaking up the gameplay
ESA The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) is where the major players of the video game industry work together to support the bright future of video games. The video game industry is one of America's fastest growing industries.
ESBR Rating ESRB ratings provide information about what's in a game or app so parents and consumers can make informed choices about which games are right for their family. Ratings have 3 parts: Rating Categories, Content Descriptors, and Interactive Elements.
Events Gaming Event means an occasion on which a game of chance is played
First person shooter a type of video game whose gameplay involves shooting enemies and other targets and in which a player views the action as though through the eyes of the character they are controlling.
FPS (Frames per Second) Frame rate, then, is the speed at which those images are shown, or how fast you “flip” through the book. It's usually expressed as “frames per second,” or FPS.
Game screens Gaming monitor is the phrase used to describe a computer monitor designed for use in a computer gaming system (“gaming rig”).
GML The Geography Markup Language (GML) is the XML grammar defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) to express geographical features.
gone gold It means that development on the game is already finished, and it's ready to be sold.
Grind In video games, grinding is performing repetitive tasks, usually for a gameplay advantage or loot but in some cases for purely aesthetic or cosmetic benefits
Janky Obsidian Entertainment is the definition of janky. Glitchy, buggy, weird issues in the game, something goes wrong in a game randomly.
Loot In video games, loot describes valuable items picked up by the player character over the course of the game, such as in-game currency, spells, equipment and weapons
MMO Massively multiplayer online game, a video game that can be played by many people simultaneously
Object A game object generally represents a particular object or element in your game that can emit a sound, including characters, weapons, ambient objects, such as torches, and so on.
Origin Point As of May 28, 2013, Origin has introduced "Origin Points", which purportedly helps track your achievements in some of EA's games on PC.
Pixels Pixel art is a form of digital art, created through the use of software, where images are edited on the pixel level.
Platform a computer system specially made for playing video games; a console: The new gaming platforms have much better graphics resolution than previous generation consoles
Quest A quest, or mission, is a task in video games that a player-controlled character, party, or group of characters may complete in order to gain a reward
realm Realm versus Realm (RvR) is a type of Player versus Player gameplay in Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) where the player base is divided over multiple preset realms that fight each other over game assets.
Room a room for relaxing or socializing in a house or public building, typically furnished with a pool table, Ping-Pong table, dart board, or other recreational amenities. or a chat room to communicate with others.
RPG Role-playing video game, electronic game genre in which players advance through a story quest, and often many side quests, for which their character or party of characters gain experience that improves various attributes and abilities.
Sprites In computer graphics, a sprite is a two-dimensional bitmap that is integrated into a larger scene, most often in a 2D video game
SDK Game Sdk stands for "Game Software Development Kit"
Strategy in which the players' uncoerced, and often autonomous, decision-making skills have a high significance in determining the outcome.
Top-Down Any game that offers an elevated viewpoint above the action can be considered to have a top-down or overhead perspective
YOYO a condition or situation marked by regular fluctuations from one extreme to another
