Chapter 22 Toxicology Emergencies

TermDefinition
Poison any substance- liquid, solid, gas that impairs health or causes death by its chemical action when entering the body
Toxicology the study of toxins and antidotes
Overdose used to describe a poisoning in which the patient has been exposed to an excessive dose of drug
4 Routes poisons can enter the body: Ingestion, Inhalation, Injection, Absorption
Antidotes a substance that neutralizes the effects of the poison or toxic substance
Huffers Patients who intentionally inhale paints and propellants
Types of foodborne illnesses Salmonella, Capylobacter, Escherichia coli (E.coli), Staphylococcus aureus
Acids less than 7 pH, typically burn 1-2 mins limiting damage
Alkalis greater than 7 pH, slow burning sensations, causing more damage
Drug Abuse the self administration of drugs in a manner that is not in accord with approved medical or social patterns
Withdrawal a period of abstinence from the drug or alcohol to which the body have come accustomed to. - this can be as serious as an overdose
Poison Control center that assists in the treatment plan for patients who have had poison exposures
Pharming - Pharming Party refers to adolescents who raid parent's or friend's medications to trade for other medications at a party
