| foreshadowing | Clues that suggest events that have yet to occur. |
| metaphor | Comparison of two things that basically unlike but have some qualities in common. |
| protagonist | The main character of a play, novel, or story, usually the hero. |
| irony | An expression of a meaning that contradicts the literal meaning. |
| personification | The giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea. |
| alliteration | The repetition of a consonant sound in the beginning of a word. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. |
| allusion | Reference in literature to a familiar person or event. |
| antagonist | Goes against the protagonist |
| autobiography | It is the author's account of his/her own life. |
| biography | A story of a person's life by another person. |
| mood | A feeling, in the reader, the author creates through his/her word choice. |
| tone | The author's feeling toward his/her subject. |
| theme | The lesson of the story. |
| external conflict | man vs. man/man vs. nature |
| internal conflict | man vs. self/man vs. society |
| resolution | The part in the story where a character solves a main problem. |
| narration | The point of view view which a story is told. |
| climax | The point in a story when the protagonist faces his/her conflict |
| onomatopoeia | Is the use of words that imitate sounds. |
| hyperbole | Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. |
| blank verse | Unrhymed poetry. |
| denouement | The final part of a story. |
| flash back | An interruption in the story from a scene that takes place before a story begins. |
| symbol | An object or idea that has its own meaning but is used to suggest a different meaning. |
| simlie | Is an expression comparing one thing to another using the words “like” or “as”. |
| metaphor | Is a comparison of two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as”. |
| imagery | Is when a writer invokes the five senses. |
| oxymoron | is a figure of speech containing words that seem to contradict each other. |
