QuestionAnswer
What is mechanical advantage? The ability to move an object with less force.
What is the cost of moving an object with less force? (M.A.) Distance principle- having to move the object over a longer distance.
Name 6 different simple machines. 1 inclined plane 2 wedges and screws 3 levers 4 wheels and axles 5 gears 6 pulleys
What is an inclined plane? A ramp; a flat surface with ends at different heights.
What is a wedge? A wedge is 2 inclined planes placed bottem to bottem to form a point.
What is M.A.? Mechanical advantage.
What is a wedge commonly used for? Pushing things apart, cutting, or splitting
What is a screw? A screw is a inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or cone.
The ___ of a screw or bolt is the distance between the threads. Pitch
Draw and label a lever. Effort and resistance | $ Fulcrum _____ ∆ |=effort $=resistance ∆=fulcrum
How does the distance principle work with screws and bolts? 1 A small pitch is easier to push into the wood but takes more time. 2 a large pitch takes more force to but less time to drive it into the wood.
List 5 examples of levers that can be found around your house. 1 wheel barrow 2 lacrosse stick 3 scissors 4 pencil 5 seesaw
How is a wheel and axle a special type of lever? The center of the axle is the fulcrum the effort and resistance and rotate around the axle.
Why is rolling Frition less than sliding friction? Each point of the wheel touches the ground for only a short period of time.
True or false? The fulcrum should be closer to the effort to make it easier to lift the resistance? False
True or false? Mechanical advantage is achieved by applying less force through a greater distance? True
True or false? The distance the between threads on a screw is called pitch? True
True or false? A screw is a special type of inclined plane? True
True or false? A wedge increases your Mechanical advantage? True
True or false? Wheels decrease fiction? True
True or false? There are 8 types of simple machines? False
True or false? Archimedes was a Geek god? False
True or false? A pulley system allows you to move the rope a shorter distance than what the resistance moves? False
True or false? A wheelbarrow is a type of lever? True
What are the two simple machines that all other simple machines are based off of? Levers and inclined planes
I have two screws. One has a pitch of 2mm, the other has a pitch of 5mm. What screw will have the greatest mechanical advantage? The 2mm pitch because it has a smaller pitch and that makes it easier to drive it into the wood.
Name 3 different wheel and axle systems that are used for mechanical advantage as opposed to reducing friction. Steering wheel, handle on a can opener, door handle.
How do you calculate the mechanical advantage in a pulley? You count the ropes in the system.
Draw a diagram that shows how the law of moments works and give the equation the law of moments. Distance 1 Distance 2 ___________-_______________ Force 1 (4g) Force 2 (2g), - = Pivot Formula= F1xD1 = F2xD2 Force 1 (4g) is closer to the pivot than force 2 (2g).
M.A.=? M.A.= L/H
what is L? Length
What is H? Height
How many types of levers are there? 3
Name three wheel and axle set ups that give M.A.. 1 steering wheel on a car 2 door handle 3 handle on can opener
Name two wheel and axle set ups that reduce friction. 1 Wheel on a wheelbarrow 2 Wheel on a trailer
