| primary sources | original documents, literary works, or first-hand accounts that are directly related to the subject and that were written in the time period you are studying. Ex: scientific reports, newspapers, speeches, autobiographies |
| secondary sources | documents that analyze and interpret primary sources. Ex: textbooks, history books, reviews |
| encyclopedias | a source of thousands of facts about a various topics in an alphabetized set of books or housed in an online format |
| biographical references | resources that provide information about a person’s life; these could be books, magazine articles, interviews, news reports, etc. |
| almanacs | annual reference books of useful and interesting facts relating to countries of the world, sports, entertainment, etc. |
| the Internet | allows individuals to access a wide range of websites, videos, articles, and media |
| media | newspapers, radio, television, interviews, periodicals that document current and past events |
| abstracts | a summary of a text, scientific article, document, speech, etc. |
| dictionaries | reference books that provide definitions of words |
| summary | a brief account of an original text that focuses on the main ideas, leaves out details, and uses original language |
| paraphrase | express the meaning of (the writer or speaker or something written or spoken) using different words (your own words) to provide clarity |
| quote | taking words or a sentence directly from a source word-for-word. You must include quote marks and a citation. |
