Unit 2 Vocabulary for English 9 B

TermDefinition
metaphor comparing two things without using "like" or "as". usually by saying something "is" or "was" something else. Ex: The sun was a ball of fire.
imagery the use of vivid images and descriptive details by an author to create a mental picture in the reader's mind
simile comparing two things using "like" or "as"
blank verse poetry that does not rhyme, but still has a certain structure. Ex: iambic pentameter
sojourn a temporary stay
augmenting changing or increasing something by adding to it
visage a person's face
perjuries lies
dissembler someone who says they think or believe something they really don't in order to hide their true feeling. Synonyms: hypocrite, phony
headstrong to be impatient or to go after what one wants without being stopped by obstacles
charnel associated with death
tarry to delay or to linger
presage a warning that something bad will happen soon
wield to hold and use (a weapon or a tool)
languish suffer
beseech ask or beg someone to do something right away
peril serious danger
invocation asking someone for assistance, usually an expert
heir someone legally entitled to someone else's property or possessions after their death
predominant the main or strongest part of something

eloquent clearly expressing someone's thoughts in speaking or in writing
