| Term | Definition |

| term | that part of the expression that is separated from the rest by a plus or minus sign |
| factor | one of two or more literal and/or numerical values of a term that are multiplied |
| numerical coefficient | the number factor of a term |
| literal factors | the letter factors of a term |
| degree | the greatest exponent found in an expression |
| monomial | an algebraic expression with one term |
| binomial | an algebraic expression with two terms |
| trinomial | an algebraic expression with three terms |
| polynomial | an algebraic expression with more than one term |
| like terms | also called similar terms - terms that have identical literal factors |
| Unlike terms | also called dissimilar terms - terms that have different literal factors or exponents |
| expression | a mathematical phrase that contains terms and symbols |
| equation | a mathematical statement that says two expressions are equal |
| constant | a value that stays the same and is represented with a number |
| variable | a value that changes and is represented with a letter |
| isolate | when a variable is alone on one side of an equation |
| balance | to do the same operation to both sides of an equation |
| solution | a value that makes an equation true |
| coefficient | the constant that works with a variable in multiplication |
| sum | the answer to an addition problem |
| difference | the answer to a subtraction problem |
| product | the answer to a multiplication problem |
| quotient | the answer to a division problem |
| substitute | to replace a variable with a constant |
| evaluate | to solve or find the value |
| equivalent | the same amount or equal amount |
