Waves Inv. 1

TermDefinition
Amplitude The maximum distance the particles move away from the rest position as a wave passes through the medium.
Crest The high part of a transverse wave
Compression The part of the longitudinal wave where the particles of a medium are closer together
Transverse wave A wave that moves the medium perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels
Longitudinal wave A wave that moves the medium parallel to the direction in which the wave travels
Pulse Short bursts that travel as a wave
Wave A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place
Trough Lowest part of a transverse wave
Reflection A bouncing back of a wave when it hits a surface through which it cannot pass
Wavelength The distance between the crest of one wave and the crest of the next
Node A point of zero amplitude on a standing wave
Frequency The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time
Velocity Speed in a given direction
