Chemical Bond Vocab

chemical bond vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Atom basic building block of matter
Element a substance consisting of a single type of atom
Compounds formed when different elements chemically react together (bond)
About compounds. some compounds have small structures with just a few atoms bonded together. other compounds have large complex structures with thousands of bonded atoms (DNA)
Molecules A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound
do the Atoms in a molecule have to be the same? no they can be both the same and different.
how many atoms are there in a molecules? two or more
Examples of molecules. oxygen ozone molecule water carbon dioxide sulfuric acid
Valence Electrons electrons in the outermost orbital
what charge does valence electrons create unbalanced charges
why do bonds form to make Valence electrons bonds form because atoms are seeking stability
what do valence electrons create atoms to do? causes atoms to be reactive and unstable
Energy Levels layers in the electron cloud where electrons exist.
all about energy levels outermost level called the valence energy level, which CANNOT hold more than 8 electrons level 1- holds 2 electrons level 2- holds 8 electrons level 3- holds 18 electrons
Octet Rule an atom is most stable when there are eight electrons in its outermost orbital chemical compounds tend to form so each atom ( by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons ) has and octet ( 8 electrons ) in its outermost energy level HAPPY ATOMS!
Covalent Bond formed by sharing of a pair of electrons formed between atoms of nonmetals do not form ions when bonding
where do covalent bonds happen happens in the outermost energy level with valence electrons
Ionic bonds formed by transfer of electrons formed between atoms of nonmetals and metals form ions ( charged particle ) ions of opposite charge attract each other forming the bond (like a magnet, opposites attract.
ions an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
