| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| plot | the events that take the reader through the story; what happens in the story |
| setting | the place and time of a scene in a story |
| conflict | the problem or struggle between opposing forces |
| exposition | beginning of the story; meet the characters, learn of the setting and conflict |
| rising action | are the main events in the story; the problem/conflict increases and the events that help move the plot along |
| climax | the turning point of the story/ the exciting part when the action and the problem come together |
| falling action | the events that wrap up the story/ problems are getting resolved |
| resolution | the end of the story when the conflicts or problems are solved |
| inciting incident | the scene when the main conflict becomes apparent or more serious |
| internal conflict | a problem a character has within their mind - usually deals with making tough decisions |
| external conflict | a problem between a character and an outside force |
| characterization | the appearance, actions and personality traits of a character |
| theme | the universal lesson of a story; the moral or the message you walk away with |
| protagonist | the main character in a story |
| antagonist | a character or force that is against the protagonist and/or other characters |
