Body Mechanics and Patient Mobility
Body position | Patient Posture |
---|---|
Orthopneic position | often used for patient's with a Cardiac or Respiratory problems. Raise the head of the bed 90 degrees and have PT lean forward on the overbed table |
Sims position | position in which PT lies on side with knee and thigh drawn upward toward chest. (left SIMS position preferred position for enema procedure and administration of rectal suppository) |
What is Orthostatic Hypotension | a form of LBP that happens when standing up from sitting or lying down. Pt taking medications used to reduce HBP are at high risk for orthostatic hypotension. Decrease in systolic BP of 20mmHg or 10mmHg diastolic w/n 3mins from shifting positions. |
To prevent PT from falling while ambulating | Bring the PT close to you and lower the patient slowly to the floor, and call for assistance. |
What is Plantar Flexion | describes the extension of the ankle so that the foot points down and away from the leg. Plantar flexion has a normal range of motion from about 20 to 50 degrees from the resting position. aka foot drop |
Which ROM exercises can be safely performed on the neck | Flexion (chin to chest); Extension (returning erect position); Hyperextension (bend head back as far as possible, not older adults); Lateral Flexion (Tilt head from side to side); Rotation (turn head as far as possible to right and left) |
Define ROM and identify the 2 types of ROM exercises | ROM the movement of the body that involves the muscle joints in natural directional movements. Passive ROM exercises performed by caregiver; Active ROM exercises performed by PT. |
Define Contractures | the tightening of muscles, tendons, ligaments, or skin. It makes it hard of impossible to move nearby joints; contractures deformity of the hand |
The nurse is assigned to care for an 82-year-old patient who weighs 252 pounds (lb) (114.54 kilograms [kg]) and has undergone a bilateral below-the-knee amputation. Which transfer method is the safest for the patient and the nurse? | MECHANICAL LIFT WITH A SLING |
The N helps ambulate an 84yr female patient who has peripheral vascular disease that caused a severe stasis ulcer. The pt becomes very weak, reports feeling faint, and begins to fall. What is the most appropriate action to prevent injury to the patient? | SUPPORT her WHILE she is FALLING and ALLOW her TO SIT ON the FLOOR |
56yr pt had an open cholecystectomy. N is going to assist the patient with dangling on the side of the bed before ambulation. After sitting the pt on the edge of the bed, which N'ing intervention should the N perform before proceeding with the ambulation? | ASSESSment of the pt's PULSE and RESPIRATIONS |
The patient accidentally knocks the emesis basin to the floor. When picking up the emesis basin, which movement demonstrates proper body mechanics by the nurse? | the nurse LOWERS the BODY by FLEXING the KNEES and BENDING the HIPS |
A pt who was admitted with the diagnosis of a stroke has slid to the foot of the bed. With use of appropriate body mechanics, the N maintains a wide base of support and faces the pt in the direction of movement. What do these actions allow the N to do? | EXERT LESS PHYSICAL EFFORT |
An 82-year-old patient has had a cerebrovascular accident that affects her right side. The nurse repositions the patient to her left side, placing a pillow between her legs and another behind her back. What is the primary purpose of this intervention? | ensuring the pt's PROPER BODY ALIGNMENT |
It is the patient's first night after an abdominal hysterectomy. She has not voided for 9 hours, and the nurse is to insert a 16 French Foley catheter into her bladder. What patient position best allows insertion of the catheter? | DORSEL RECUMBENT |
N assigned pt admitted for exacerbation of COPD & pneumonia.Pt is having dyspnea& unable to rest in a supine.N elevates the head of the bed to 90, places a pillow on the overbed table& assists the pt to lean forward, placing the pt's head on the pillow.Wha | ORTHOPNEIC |
The nurse explains to the patient that the log-rolling technique will be used to help the patient change position. The patient asks why this is necessary. Which response is accurate? | “It is important to KEEP NECK AND SPINE IN STRAIGHT ALIGNMENT while we help you move onto your side. |
The nurse and a UAP are to move a dependent patient from the supine to the lateral position. Which action should be performed first? | ensure that the UPPER ARM AND LEG are SUPPORTED with pillows |
An older adult patient has been lying in the supine position for 3 hours and tells the nurse that she is too uncomfortable to move right now. What is the best response by the nurse? | The nurse should ASSESS the patient's NEED FOR PAIN MEDICATION BEFORE helping her CHANGING her POSITION |
The student nurse demonstrated principles of good body mechanics with which activity? | Maintaining a WIDE BASE OF SUPPORT and BENDing AT THE KNEES |
A patient becomes faint and diaphoretic while sitting on the side of the bed in preparation to ambulate. To prevent injury to the patient and nurse, which action should the nurse take? | The nurse should CALL FOR ASSISITANCE; DO NOT ALLOW PT TO GET OUT OF BED |
A patient has been immobilized for 5 days because of extensive abdominal surgery. When this patient is helped out of bed for the first time, which patient problem related to safety applies to this patient? | POTENTIAL FOR INABILITY TO TOLERATE ACTIVITY; potential for falling |
Which assistive device allows patients to pull with the upper extremities to raise their trunk off the bed, to assist in transfer from bed to wheelchair, and to perform upper arm exercises? | TRAPEZE BAR |
In which position is the patient lying face down or chest down? | PRONE |
What is a necessary safety precaution when helping a patient who has an unsteady gait to ambulate? | Have patient wear WELL-FITTING NONSKID SHOES or slippers; Have at least Two PEOPLE PRESENT to assist the patient; use GAIT BELT when assisting pts to stand or ambulate |
What is a major benefit of active ROM exercises? | preventing contractures; maintaining joint movement and mobility; Preventing atrophy of the muscle near the joints; Increasing the pt's self-esteem and motivation |
The nurse is receiving a report on a patient. The nurse giving the report states that the patient has foot drop. The nurse receiving the report knows that which is the correct terminology for foot drop? | ankle extension |
When using a lift sheet to assist in moving a patient up in bed, what should the nurse ask the patient to do? | Maintain good body alignment |
