Creative Writing Short Stories Test Review

TermDefinition
indirect characterization occurs when the writer reveals the character by showing his/her speech, thoughts, effects on others, and actions
direct characterization occurs when the writer tells the reader what the character looks like and what his/her personality is
plot the sequence of events in the story
conflict The main problem in the story, the focus of the action
first person point of view A story written with an inside narrator
second person point of view A story that uses “you” to directly address the reader
third person point of view A story written with an outside narrator
dialogue Conversation between characters in a story
summary when the writer briefly tells the reader about the events that occured when they are not crucial to the action or important enough to bee fully developed
scene a combination of action and dialogue intended to make the reader feel like part of the action
setting the time, place, and atmosphere of the story
mood The way the description of the setting is intended to make the reader feel
protagonist The main character in the story around whom all of the action centers
antagonist character or force that poses a problem for the main character
narrator a character who tells his/her own story or the protagonist's story
dynamic character a character who changes over the course of the story
static character a character, usually a minor one, who does not change over the course of the story
flat character a character that is not fully developed, usually embodying a single character trait
round character a character who is well developed so he/she seems fully human
agency the character’s ability to influence to the events of the story
suspense Tension in the story that makes the reader want to keep reading
progressive peaks Periods of high tension followed by “rest periods” that build the plot of the story
logical progression Events that naturally and reasonably follow each other
