Algebraic Expression An expression that contains at least one variable
Associative Property Moving the parentheses to create different groups
Base When a number is raised to a power this is the number used as a factor
Coefficient The number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression
Commutative Property Changing the order of the factors or addends
Composite Number A number greater than 1 that has more than two whole number factors
Cubed A number raised to the third power
Difference The answer to a subtraction problem
Distributive Property The property that states if you multiply the sum by a number you will get the same result if you multiply each addend by that number then add the products
Equation A mathematical sentence that shows that two expressions are equivalent
Equivalent Having the same value
Evaluate To find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression
Expanded Form A number written as a product of repeated multiplication
Exponent The number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor
Exponential form A number written with a base and an exponent
Factor A number that is multiplied by another number to get a product
Numerical Expression An expression that contains only numbers and operations
Order of Operations A rule for evaluating expressions
Prime Factorization A number written as the product of its prime factors
Prime Number A whole number greater than one that has exactly two factors itself and 1
Product The answer to a multiplication problem
Quotient The answer to a division problem
Squared A number raised to the second power
Standard Form A way to write numbers using digits
Substitution To replace a variable with a number or another expression in an algebraic expression
Sum The answer to an addition problem
Variable A symbol used to represent a quantity that can change
