Sed. Rock & Fossils

What do we call the preserved remains of organisms that lived in the past? Fossils
By studying fossils, what can scientist determine? They can determine what organisms lived in the past and what the environment was like.
If a shark tooth were discovered in the forest, what conclusion about the past can we make about the area it was found in? The area was once covered by an ocean.
If an imprint fossil of a fern leaf were found, what can we conclude about the past environment? It was once a swamp.
The youngest layer can be found on the top or the bottom layer? Top Layer
What are small pieces of rock called? sediments
The oldest layer can be found on the top or bottom layer? Bottom Layer
What is the first step to the formation of sedimentary rock? Sediments are deposited in a layer.
What is the first step in fossil formation? An animal dies and is buried by sediment.
Sedimentary rock forms in three steps. They include deposition, compaction, and... cementation
Fossils occur in four steps. An animal dies and is buried quickly, the sediments are pressed together, the sediments are cemented together, Over time, a sedimentary rock contains the hardened remains of an ancient animal.
