Terms & Definitions for the SPH3U Forces unit

TermDefinition
net force the total of two or more forces acting on an object
normal force force that supports an object from falling through a surface; acts at right angles to the surfaces in contact
friction force that opposes motion when one surface moves or intends to move with/across another
tension a pulling force transmitted along the axis of a rope, chain, cable, rod, etc...
applied force a push or pull exerted on an object from a contact source (which doesn't fit into any other force category)
gravity force of attraction between objects that have mass
free-body diagram a vector diagram showing all the forces acting simultaneously on an object in a given instant
newton the unit of force (N) that is used in the metric system
