Functions & Linear

Pre-Algebra

TermDefinition
Coordinate Plane Formed by the intersection of two numbers lines, the horizontal axis and the vertical axis.
X-axis The horizontal axis on the coordinate plane.
Y-axis The vertical axis on the coordinate plane.
Quadrants the four regions into which the x and y-axis separate the coordinate plane.
Origin The point at which the x and y-axis intersect on the coordinate plane. (0,0)
Ordered Pair The set of numbers, or coordinates, written in the form (x,y).
X-coordinate The x-value of an ordered pair, represents the horizontal placement of the point.
Y-coordinate The y-value of an ordered pair, represents the vertical placement of the point.
Relation A set of ordered pairs
Domain The set of x-values within the ordered pairs of a relation.
Range The set of y-values within the ordered pairs of a relation.
Independent Variable The x-value within a function. y=mx+b (the "x" is independent
Dependent Variable The y-value within a function. y=mx+b (the "y" is dependent)
Vertical Line Test if any vertical line passes through the graph of a relation no more than once, than it is a function.
Rate of Change A ratio that shows how one variable changes with respect to another.
Slope A ratio that compares the vertical to horizontal change between points.
Positive Slope A line that is increasing from left to right.
Negative Slope A line that is decreasing from left to right
Zero Slope A horizontal line
Undefined Slope A vertical line
Slope Formulula A formula used to find the slope between 2 points. m= (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) or m=Change in Y/Change in X
Standard Form Another form of a line Ax+By=C (where A,B,C are integers and x &y are variables)
Vertical Line A line with an undefined Slope: x=a (where "a" is any real number)
Horizontal Line A line with zero slope; y=a (where "a" is any real number)
Linear Function A function represented
Nonlinear Function A function that cannot be represented by a line, but often is a curve; rate of change is NOT constant. (Not the same number)
Proportional Relationship If the ratios of quantities are equal, Than they are proportional. Example: 5 Candies = $0.50 & 7 Candies = $0.70
Non-Proportional Relationship If the ratios of quantities are not equal, then they are not proportional. 12 Candies = $1 & 30 Candies = $2
Constant of Variation The ratio between all ordered pairs k=y/x
Direct Variation A specific relationship in which there is a constant ratio between all ordered pairs. y=k*x

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
