Unit 3 Vocabulary

| personal traits | characteristics based on what a character does, says, thinks, and feels; what they are like on the inside |
| textual evidence | evidence found in a text, such as a passage, article, or book |
| theme | the underlying message, moral, or lesson the author is trying to convey through the character’s actions throughout a book |
| summarize | to give a short explanation of what a book is about or what happens in a story |
| simile | to compare two unlike things using the words like or as |
| metaphor | to compare two unlike things by saying one thing is another |
| idiom | a group of words whose collective meaning is quite different from their literal, individual meaning |
| physical traits | features of a character that can be seen, such as hair color, eyes, and height |
| alliteration | the repetition of the initial consonant sounds (e.g., Dunkin Donuts) |
| onomatopoeia | the word for a sound (e.g., creak, sizzle) |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration (e.g., "My bookbag weighs a ton!") |
| adage | a proverb or short statement expressing a general truth |
| personification | giving a human quality to a nonhuman (animal, plant, object) |
