Terms & Definitions for the SPH3U Kinematics unit

kinematics the study of how things move
scalar a quantity that includes a number and units
vector a quantity that includes a number, units and a direction
magnitude the number part of a quantity which indicates its size
position the location of an object relative to a fixed reference point
distance the length of an object or the length of a path travelled
displacement the change of position of an object
speed the rate of distance travelled per unit of time
velocity the rate of displacement per unit of time
instantaneous a quantity that was determined for a specific moment in time
average a quantity that was determined using information over an interval of time
constant velocity the speed and direction of an object remain the same throughout its motion
constant speed the speed of an object remains the same throughout its motion
uniform motion an object maintaining constant velocity
acceleration the rate of change of speed (scalar) or velocity (vector) with respect to time
uniform the measured quantity stays the same over time
non-uniform the measured quantity changes magnitude and/or direction over time
projectile an object which moves through the air without a propulsion system along a parabolic trajectory, accelerating due to gravity
trajectory the path of an object as it moves through the air
