Mitosis Vocabulary

interphase "regular life" for a cell; cell gets a signal to divide and DNA replicates
prophase chromosomes become visible and look like thick strands, nuclear membrane dissolves, spindle fibers form
metaphase chromosomes are pulled to line up across the middle of the cell
anaphase Spindle fibers pull chromosomes apart
telophase the cell membrane pinches and puts everything back together; nuclear membrane reforms; chromosomes loosen back into DNA
mitosis the process of creating new cells
chromosomes A threadlike, gene-carrying structure found in the nucleus. Each chromosome consists of one very long DNA molecule and associated proteins.
chromatid one of two identical "sister" parts of a duplicated chromosome
cytokinesis final separation of the two cells
cell plate forms during plant cell mitosis
