| interphase | "regular life" for a cell; cell gets a signal to divide and DNA replicates |
| prophase | chromosomes become visible and look like thick strands, nuclear membrane dissolves, spindle fibers form |
| metaphase | chromosomes are pulled to line up across the middle of the cell |
| anaphase | Spindle fibers pull chromosomes apart |
| telophase | the cell membrane pinches and puts everything back together; nuclear membrane reforms; chromosomes loosen back into DNA |
| mitosis | the process of creating new cells |
| chromosomes | A threadlike, gene-carrying structure found in the nucleus. Each chromosome consists of one very long DNA molecule and associated proteins. |
| chromatid | one of two identical "sister" parts of a duplicated chromosome |
| cytokinesis | final separation of the two cells |
| cell plate | forms during plant cell mitosis |
