Identify the elements of a FOLKTALE 1. supernatural events set in the distant past 2. talking animals or characters with supernatural abilities 3. lessons about what is important to the culture or origin (theme)
Who is the NARRATOR of the story? According to their DIALECT and their knowledge of the story events, the narrator could be an African American storyteller from the days of slavery.
When did the people in this story first learn to fly? When they were free in their home in Africa.
Why did these individuals stop flying? They had to shed their wings and board ships to be taken to plantations in America to work as slaves.
Who helps the slaves regain their ability to fly? Toby
What is a METAPHOR? A comparison of two unlike things that have something in common WITHOUT using like or as.
What does the narrator mean when she says the Master was a hard lump of clay, a glinty piece of coal, a hard rock pile? He is stern, tough, and has no sympathy toward the slaves.
What is the job of those who remain on the plantation at the end of the story? They will pass along this story to their children.
What does the ability to fly symbolize for the slaves? FREEDOM
What does the plantation symbolize for these slaves? SLAVERY
What are some examples of DIALECT as used in the story? Say that, Don't you know, climbin' flyin'
Why was the use of DIALECT so important for this story? It allows the reader to better understand the story's setting.
Describe Toby. Toby is a compassionate person. He wants to help his fellow slaves.
What is a good theme for this story? Always hold onto hope, even in the worst circumstances!
What does CROON mean? to hum or sing softly
What does SNAG mean? to catch unexpectedly
What does SHUFFLE mean? short sliding steps
What is a PLANTATION? a place where crops are grown
What type of conflict would describe Sarah's emotional struggle in this story? man vs self
What type of conflict would describe the slaves relationship with the Master? man vs man
