Story Elements
| Term | Definition |

| setting | the time and place in which the story occurs |
| antagonist | the character or force that causes the conflict/problem and works against the protagonist |
| protagonist | the main character in the story; the action happens around this character |
| conflict | the struggle between opposing forces or characters in a story |
| theme | the message that the writer wants to get across to the reader |
| character traits | the individual qualities that make each character unique |
| plot | the sequence of events in a story that center around the conflict |
| plot: exposition | beginning of the story where the characters, setting, and problem/conflict are revealed |
| plot: rising action | the problem/conflict in the story becomes more complicated; suspense occurs |
| plot: climax | the highest point of the action and the turning point of the story. The reader wonders what will happen next; will the conflict/problem be resolved or not? |
| plot: falling action | conflict/problem begins to resolve; the reader knows what will happen next (events between climax and resolution). |
| plot: resolution | the outcome of the conflict/problem is revealed |
| internal conflict | the conflict that occurs inside the heart/mind of a character in the story (person vs. self) |
| external conflict | the conflict that takes place between the main character and some outside force (person vs. person, person vs. nature, or person vs. society) |
| suspense | A feeling of growing tension and excitement felt by the reader. Keeps the reader wanting to know more. |
