Chapter 13
Sill and Floor Construction
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Platform Landing | The floor joists form a platform on which the walls rest. |
| Balloon Framing | The wall studs rest directly on the sill plate and each floor "hangs" from the studs. |
| Joists | Provide support for the floor. |
| Cross Bridging | Is used to stiffen the floor and spread the load over a broader area. |
| Floor Trusses | Are designed for light frame construction. They are often used in place of floor joists. They contain a top chord, a bottom chord, and a web. |
| Subfloor | Is affixed to the floor joists and provides the surface on which the underlayment for the final finished floor will rest. |
| Cantilevered Joists | Are required when the joists are parallel to the overhanging area. |
| Cement Mortar Mix | A special type of concrete. It is a mixture of one part Portland cement and six parts sand. |
| Engineered Wood Products (EWPs) | Used a lot in new construction. They combine wood veneers and fibers with adhesives to form beams, headers, joists, and panels That have uniformly higher quality and strength. |
| Oriented Strand Board (OSB) | A product in which long strands of wood are mixed with resin, placed in layers, and pressed and cured. |
| Parallel Strand Lumber (PSL) | A product in which thin strands of wood are glued together under pressure. |
| Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) | A product in which veneers of wood are stacked in parallel and glued under pressure. First used for high strength aircraft parts. |
| Glulam Beams | Consist of 1x or 2x lumber that glued in stacks to the desired shape and size. |
| Wood I-Beams | Used primarily for long span applications in floor and roof systems. |
| Post and Beam Construction | Uses posts, beams, and planks as framing members that are larger and spaced farther apart than conventional framing members. |
| Curtain Walls | Walls that do not support much weight. They provide for wide expanses of glass without the need for headers. |
| Longitudinal Method | The beams are placed at right angles to the roof slope. The decking is laid from the ridge pole to the eaves line. |
| Transverse Method | The beams follow the roof slope and decking runs parallel to the roof ridge. |
| Chord | The horizontal flanges at the top and bottom of the truss. |
| Web | The framework between the chords. |
| Beam | A load-bearing wall. Needed to support the joists and effectively reduce the span. |
| Sill | The lowest member of the frame in a structure. |
| Box Sill | A method of sill construction used in platform framing. It consists of a plate called a sill and a header that is the same size as the floor joists. |
| Mudsill | A 2" x 6" plate used in a box sill. |
