Functions

TermDefinition
Relation A relationship between a set of values.
Function A mathematical relationship where each input has exactly one output value.
Domain The complete set of possible input values.
Range The complete set of possible output values.
Vertical Line Test A test used to determine if a graph is a function.
Element An object or a number that makes up a set of values.
Function Notation A way of writing the equation representing a function, such that it denotes the output in terms of the input; generally f(x) =, read as “f of x equals”.
Input-Output Table a two-column table where the left column is a list of input values, x, and the right column is a list of output values, f(x).
Restricted Domain When the inputs of a relation are restricted to a specific range of values.
Sequence A list of objects (usually numbers) that are written in a significant order.
Term An element of a sequence.
Arithmetic Sequence A sequence of terms that are separated by a constant value called the common difference.
Common Difference The difference between consecutive terms in an arithmetic sequence.
Finite Sequence A sequence which has a definitive first and last term.
Infinite Sequence A sequence with infinitely many terms.
Explicit Formula A formula for the nth term of a sequence in terms of the index n.
Recursive Formula A formula for the nth term of a sequence in terms of one or more of the previous terms.
Index Describes the position of terms in the sequence, denoted by n.
Average Rate of Change The measure of how a function changes over a specified interval a ≤ x ≤ b.
Slope A measure of the change in output value divided by the change in the input value of a function; also called the rate of change.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
