point of view the perspective an author takes when writing a story (who is telling the story)
first person when a story is told from the perspective of a character in the story
second person when a story is told by speaking to you (the audience)
third person limited when a story is told by a narrator, but they only know one particular character’s thoughts and feelings
third person omniscient when a story is told by a narrator who is “all-knowing” and knows the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters in the story
plot the chain of events in a story
exposition the introduction of the story when characters and setting are introduced, as well as the inciting incident
inciting incident the event that sets everything else in the story in motion
rising action where a majority of the story takes place; the story builds up and the character faces complications
climax the most exciting or intense part of the story
falling action when the loose ends of a story are starting to come together leading to the end
resolution the end of the story when the problem has been solved and the character has reached their goal(s)
summary a brief statement or account of the main points of something
