Chapter 2 Math Vocabulary to Study

TermDefinition
Commutative Property the order in which numbers are added does not change the sum
Associative Property the way in which the numbers are grouped does not change the sum
Identity Property the sum of any number and 0 is the number
Sum the answer to an addition problem
Addend any numbers being added in an addition problem
Difference the answer to a subtraction problem
Minuend the first number in a subtraction sentence from which a second number is being subtracted
Subtrahend the number that is subtracted in a subtraction problem
Estimate an answer close to the exact answer
Round to change the value of a number to one that is easier to work with
Equation a sentence that contains an equal sign show that both sides of the equal sign are equal
Variable a symbol, often a letter, that is used to represent an unknown
