3D Printing Parts

Parts Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Build Plate The area where a 3D print is printed upon.
Direct Drive A method of extrusion by which the extruder pushes the filament directly into the nozzle.
Nozzle The part of a 3D printer where the build material is extruded from.
End Part A component that is intended to be used directly in a functional capacity.
Extruder A part of a 3D printer where material is ejected in liquid or semi-liquid form. It is deposited in successive layers within the 3D printing volume.
Nozzle Diameter The size of the material that is extruded out of the nozzle. This plays an important role in printing where shells and walls should be a multiple of nozzle diameter.
Print Head The part of a 3D printer where material is extruded/jedded from. It is and assembly of multiple components including the nozzle in the case 3D printing.
Bowden set up Unlike a direct extrusion machine, a this is mounted on the printer’s frame. It pushes and pulls filament through a long tube and into the hot end.
