Exploring More Functions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Piecewise Function | A piecewise-defined function is a function defined by more than one equation, each of which applies to a different part of the domain. |
| Absolute Value Function | Absolute value functions have an algebraic expression within absolute value symbols. |
| Positive Function | A function is positive on intervals where the graph is above the x-axis. |
| Negative Function | A function is negative on intervals where the graph is below the x-axis. |
| Step Function | A step function is a piecewise-defined function in which every piece is a horizontal line segment. |
| Transformation | The process by which the existing graph can be changed. |
| Horizontal Translation | A horizontal translation moves the graph left or right. |
| Vertical Translation | A vertical translation moves the graph up or down. |
| Stretch Graph Vertically | To stretch the graph in the y direction, multiply the output by a constant. |
| Shrink Graph Vertically | To shrink the graph in the y direction, divide the output by a constant. |
| Stretch Graph Horizontally | To stretch the graph in the x direction, divide the input by a constant. |
| Shrink Graph Horizontally | To shrink the graph in the x direction, multiply the input by a constant. |
| Square Root Function | A function that contains a square root with the independent variable in the radicand. |
| Cube Root Function | A function that contains a cube root with the independent variable in the radicand. |
