Exploring More Functions

TermDefinition
Piecewise Function A piecewise-defined function is a function defined by more than one equation, each of which applies to a different part of the domain.
Absolute Value Function Absolute value functions have an algebraic expression within absolute value symbols.
Positive Function A function is positive on intervals where the graph is above the x-axis.
Negative Function A function is negative on intervals where the graph is below the x-axis.
Step Function A step function is a piecewise-defined function in which every piece is a horizontal line segment.
Transformation The process by which the existing graph can be changed.
Horizontal Translation A horizontal translation moves the graph left or right.
Vertical Translation A vertical translation moves the graph up or down.
Stretch Graph Vertically To stretch the graph in the y direction, multiply the output by a constant.
Shrink Graph Vertically To shrink the graph in the y direction, divide the output by a constant.
Stretch Graph Horizontally To stretch the graph in the x direction, divide the input by a constant.
Shrink Graph Horizontally To shrink the graph in the x direction, multiply the input by a constant.
Square Root Function A function that contains a square root with the independent variable in the radicand.
Cube Root Function A function that contains a cube root with the independent variable in the radicand.
