| Element | a fundamental substance that cannot be broken into simpler substances by chemical or physical processes. |
| Metal | a group of elements that bend, stretch and conduct electricity. |
| Non-Metal | a group of elements that have lack the properties of metals. |
| Noble Gas | a gaseous element that does not react with other elements. |
| Halogens | the only family on the periodic table that has all three phases of matter in it. |
| Group/Family | elements in the same vertical columns of the periodic table. They have the same physical and chemical characteristics. |
| Force | a push or a pull |
| Expand | an increase in volume |
| Compress | reduction of the size of an object do to applied pressure. |
| Closed System | an isolated space from the outside |
| Reaction | a process during which a starting substance changes into a new substance with a different arrangement of atoms. |
| Row/Period | the horizontal rows on the periodic table. |
| Metalloids | Elements on the periodic table that have some of the characteristics of metals and some non-metals. |
| Solid | has definite shape and definite volume. |
| Liquid | has definite volume but takes the shape of the container. |
| Gas | has no definite shape nor definite volume. |
| Particles | the smallest piece of a substance that is still that substance. |
| Volume | a defined quantity of space. |
| Substance | a type of matter defined by unique particles. |
| Pressure | the force exerted on a surface divided by the total area over which the force is exerted. |
