Literary Terms from Adventures in reading (diction-local color)

| Drama | Story written to be acted out on stage |
| Dramatic Irony | Device which allows the audience/reader something that the character is unaware of |
| Dramatic Poetry | Poetry in which one or more characters speak (tells a story) |
| Elegy | Lyric poem which expresses mourning, usually over the death of an individual |
| Epic | Long narrative poem that centers on a single important character who embodies the values of society |
| Epethet | adjective phrase used to set apart, describe, and characterize a person, place, or thing |
| Essay | Brief examination of a subject in prose, usually expressing a personal or limited view of the topic |
| Exaggeration | Saying more than what is literally true, usually for humor or emphasis |
| Exposition | kind of wriitng that explains a subject or provides info |
| Fable | Very brief story told to teach a moral or a lesson |
| Falling Action | All the action in a play that follows the turning point |
| Farce | Type of comic play in which ridiculous situations/characters are used to make us laugh |
| Fiction | Any work of literature that includes work that is fake |
| Figurative Language | Language that is used to describe one thing in terms of something else. Not intended to be taken literally |
| Figure of speech | Any expression that uses language figuratively, not literally |
| Flashback | A scene in a story or play that interrupts the present action to tell of earlier events |
| Foil | A character, place, or event that is used to contract with another character, place, or event |
| Foreshadowing | Use of clues that hint at important plot developments that are to follow in a story or drama |
| Frame Story | A story which contains another story within or that serves to unify different narratives |
| Free Verse | Poetry without a fixed line length, stanza form, rhyme scheme, or meter |
| Hyperbole | Figure of Speech which uses exaggeration or overstatement for effect |
| Iambic Pentameter | Five iambs in a line of poetry |
| Imagery | Words or phrases that use description to create pictures, or images, in the readers mind |
| Inversion | The reversal of the usual order of words in a sentence |
| Irony | Contrast or discrepancy between what is stated and what is meant, or what is expected to happen and what does happen |
| Literal Language | Language that states facts or ideas directly |
| Local Color | The use of details describing the speech, dress, customs, or scenery associated with a region |
