Poetry Vocab

TermDefinition
Poem a collection of words that expresses ideas or emotions in a powerfully vivid and imaginative style
Poet a person who writes poems
Poetry a text type that aims to stir a reader's imagination or emotions by carefully choosing and arranging language for its meaning, sound and rhythm
Composer the greater of a text or work of art
Compose to write or create a work of art
Stanza a set of lines in a poem grouped together and set apart from other lines
Syllable a part of a word that is pronounced with one uninterrupted sound (usually one vowel sound, with or without accompanying consonant sounds)
Language an organised system of symbols, signs, sounds, or gestures used to communicate ideas and information
Purpose the reason for doing something or the reason that something exists
Tone the attitude or feeling conveyed in spoken or written text
Form a type of poem that follows a particular set of rules
Limerick a 5 line poem, usually humorous, with a strong rhythm and rhyme scheme (AABBA)
Haiku a 3 line Japanese poem of seventeen syllables (5/7/5), traditionally evoking images of the natural world
Cinquain a 5 line poem, usually unrhymed, that often starts with one word, then each line gets longer until the final line, which is short again
