| foreshadowing | hints or clues that suggest what may happen later in the story |
| suspense | the anxiety a reader feels about what may happen next in the story |
| textual evidence | evidence found in a text, such as a passage, article, or book |
| plot | the chain of events that make up a story |
| complications | problems that arise as characters struggle to reach their goals |
| quote | word for word from an author shown in quotation marks |
| protagonist | the main character in the story |
| inference | a conclusion reached based on prior knowledge (schema) and evidence |
| antagonist | the character (or entity) in conflict with the protagonist |
| flashback | interrupting the plot of the story to recreate an incident of an earlier time |
| cite | using text from a passage, article, or book as evidence |
| conflict | a struggle between two opposing forces or characters |
| cliffhanger | an ending to a section, chapter, or novel that leaves the reader “hanging,” or in suspense |
| setting | the time and place of a story |
