Verbs
| Term | Definition |

| Main Verb | The verb that typically shows the action or state of being of the subject, e.g: the man 'went' on a boat. |
| Auxiliary | Verbs that come before main verbs, e.g: be, do, have. |
| Modal | Refers to verbs that express intention, necessity or possibility, e.g: must, may, might, can, could, should, shall, would, will. |
| Dynamic | Refers to a physical action, expression or process done by the subject, e.g: jumped, kicked. |
| Stative | Refers to the state of the subject, or the situation of the subject, e.g: hoped, wished. |
| Verb Phrase | Consists of either a main verb, or a main verb followed by one or more auxiliary verbs, e.g. the baby was sleeping soundly. |
