QuestionAnswer
List the two principal functions of the testis Sperm production & testosterone production
A common part of any physical exam of the male is palpation of the prostate. How? Through the anterior wall of the rectum
How might enlargement of the prostate interfere with urine or the reproductive ability of the male? It may compress the urethra which can interfere with elimination of urine & semen.
Why are the testes located in the scrotum rather than inside the ventral body cavity? In order for sperm to develop the temperature in the testes needs to be 3 degrees below body temperature.
copulatory organ/penetrating device penis
muscular passageway conveying sperm to the ejaculatory duct; in the spermatic cord ductus deferns
transports both sperm and urine spongy urethra
sperm maturation site epidymis
location of the testis in adult males scrotum
location of the testis in adult males scrotum
loose fold of skin encircling the glans penis prepuce
portion of the urethra between the prostate and the penis membranous urethra
Empties a secretion into the prostatic urethra Prostate
Empties a secretion into themembranous urethra bulbourethral glands
Describe the composition of semen and name all structures contributing to its formation An alkaline fluid containing sperm and seminal fluid. Prostate; paired seminal vescicles (fructose) bulbourethral glands (seminal fluid) testes produce sperm
Of what importance is the fact that seminal fluid is alkaline? It buffers sperm against the acidity of the female reporductive system & washes residual urine out of the urethra
What structures compose the spermatic cord? Ductus deferens, blood vessels, nerves, lymph vessels; connective tissue sheath
Where is the spermatic cord located? Scrotum- passes from the scrotal sac thru the inguinal canal into an abdominal cavity
Trace the pathway of sperm from testes to the urethra; Seminiferous Tubule; rete testis; epididymis; ductus deferens.
Name the structures composing the external genitalia or vulva of the female; Mons pubis, labia major & minor, clitoris, urethral & vaginal orafices, hymen, greater vestibular glands
Site of fetal development uterus
copulatory canal vagina
"fertilized egg" typically formed here uterine tube
become erect during secual excitement clitoris
duct extending superolaterally from the uterus uterine tubes
partially sloses the vaginal canal; a membrane hymen
Produces oocytes, estrogens and progesterone ovaries
fingerlike ends of the uterine tube fimbriae
Do any sperm enter the pelvic cavity of the female? Why or Why not? Yes, because the ideal place for sperm to fertilize an egg is the uterine tube.
What is an ectopic pregnancy? An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus. Usually unsuccessful and may endanger the mother's life
Put the vestibular-perineal structures in proper order from anterior to posterior:Vaginal orifice, anus, urethral opening and clitoris clitoris; urethral opening; vaginal orafice; anus
After copulation, trace the pathway of sperm thru the female reproductive tract; vagina; cervix; uterus; uterine tube; peritoneal cavity
Define ovulation; When a developed egg is ejected from the ovary
The testis is divided into a number of lobes lobes contains one to four ____________________ which converge to empty sperm into another set of tubules called the ____________________. highly coiled seminiferous tubules; rete testis
What is the function of the cavernous bodies seen in the male penis? The cavernous bodies engorge w/blood and cause the penis to become rigid & enlarge so it can penetrate "erection"
Name the 3 layers of the uterine wall from the inside out; endometrium; myometrium; perimetrium
Which lining sloughs off during menstruation? endometrium
Which lining contracts during childbirth? myometrium
What is the function of the stereocilia exhibited by the epithelial cells of the mucosa of the epididymis? These non-motile microvilli absorb excess fluid & pass nutrients to the sperm in the lumen
