| ethnic group | a group of people who share national or cultural |
| values | a general principles or beliefs people use to make judgments and decisions |
| institution | a key practice, relationship, or organization in a society |
| arbitrary | not agreed upon ; seemingly random |
| popular sovereignty | the idea that powers lies with the people |
| citizens | community member who owes loyalty to the government |
| civics | the study of rights and duties of citizens |
| citizenship | rights and duties of members of a state |
| government | a ruling authority for a community |
| naturalization | a legal process to obtain citizenship |
| deny | to take away a right or privilege |
| aliens | a foreign-born resident of the united states who has not been naturalized |
| refugee | a person who has unwillingly his or her home to escape war, famine, or other disaster |
| priority | the goals a community considers most urgent; the highest ranking on a list |
| responsibility | an obligation hat we fulfill voluntarily |
| duties | a thing we a required to do |
| register | to record or in roll |
| draft | to call for military service |
| tolerance | respecting and accepting others regardless of there beliefs practices or defenses |
| welfare | a health, prosperity and happiness of members of a community |
| volunteerism | the practice of offering your time and serves without payment |
| resolve | to find a solution to a disagreement |
| public policy | the course of action the government takes in response to an issue or problem |
| representative democracy | a government in witch citizens choose a smaller group to govern there belief |
| constitutional monarchy | monarchy in which the power of the hereditary ruler is limited by the country's constitution and laws |
| totalitarian | a system in which government control extends to almost all aspects of people's lives |
| ideology | a body of ideas about life and society |
| socialism | system in which society, either directly or indirectly through the government, controls all aspects of the economy |
