Mechanism definition

TermDefinition
Drive Gear The gear which transmits power and motion to the rest of the system. THE INPUT GEAR
Driven Gear The member of a pair of gears to which motion and power are transmitted by the other gear. THE OUTPUT GEAR
Energy The capacity to do work; the use of mechanisms is necessary to transfer energy.
Direction of travel If the Input handle can be turned in both directions for at least one full turn, the device has a REVERSIBLE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL. If it can only be turned in one direction, it is NON REVERSIBLE.
Flow of power If you can make the INPUT SHAFT TURN by TURNING THE OUTPUT SHAFT the FLOW OF POWER IS REVERSIBLE. If the input shaft DOES NOT TURN or only turns part of the way, the power is NON REVERSIBLE.
Force A push or pull in STRAIGHT LINE
Gear A toothed wheel that works with others to alter the relation between the speed of an engine and the speed of the driven parts.
Gear ratio The ratio of the speed of the DRIVING MEMBER OF A GEAR TRAIN TO THAT OF THE DRIVEN MEMBER.
Input Something added to a system, such as resources, in order to achieve a result.
Inverse Something added to a system, such as a resource, in order to achieve a result.
Linear Movement in a STRAIGHT LINE
Mechanical advantage The ratio of the THE FORCE THE PERFORMS THE USEFUL WORK OF A MACHINE TO THE FORCE THAT IS APPLIED TO THE MACHINE.
Mechanism The part of a machine which contains two or more pieces arranged so that the motion of one compels to the motion of the others.
Oscillating A SWING BACK AND FORTH IN AN ARC at a regular rate.
Output The results of the operation of any system
Meshing Meshing is a term used to describe the PROPER ENGAGEMENT OF TEETH BETWEEN TWO OR MORE GEARS IN A GEAR TRAIN.
Reciprocate A BACK AND FORTH MOVEMENT IN A STRAIGHT LINE.
Rotary CIRCULAR MOVEMENT
Ratio The quantitative relation between TWO AMOUNT SHOWING THE NUMBER OF TIMES ONE VALUE CONTAINS OR IS CONTAINED WITHIN THE OTHER
Torque A push or pull in a CIRCULAR DIRECTION. A TWISTING FORCE
Work The application of force that moves an object a certain distance.
