Physics - Motion
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Formula for speed | Distance ââââ Time |
| Scalar quantity | Quantity that has magnitude only |
| Example of a scalar quantity | Distance, speed |
| Vector quantity | A quantity with magnitude and direction |
| Example of a vector quantity | Velocity, acceleration |
| Velocity | Speed in a given direction |
| Formula for velocity | Displacement ââââââ Time |
| Speed | Distance travelled per unit time |
| Displacement | The direct distance between an objects previous and current positions E.g. I walked from Aâââ10mâââB. I meandered down the road, meaning the distance I travelled was 15 metres, but I was displaced 10 metres which is a straight line from A to B |
| Formula for displacement | s = ut + 1/2 at^2 |
| Acceleration | Change in velocity over time |
| Formula for acceleration | a = v - u ââ t |
| Unit for acceleration | ms^ -2 |
| Unit for velocity | ms^ -1 |
| Unit for speed | m/s |
| Unit for displacement | m |
