Chap 1 Vocab Review

variable a letter than is used to represent one or more variables
exponent the number or variable that represents the number of times the base is used as a factor
base a number or variable that is used as a factor in repeated multiplication
sum the answer to an addition problem
grouping symbols symbols, such as parentheses or brackets, that indicate the order in which operations should be performed
quotient the answer to a division problem
equation a statement formed when an equal sign is placed between two expressions
inequality a sentence formed when two expressions are compared, with one being greater than the other
difference the answer to a subtraction problem
function a relationship between two quantities, where each input has exactly one output
solution the value or values that make an equation or inequality true
product the answer to a multiplication problem
range the collection of all output values
domain the collection or all input values
open sentence a mathematical sentence that contains variables
