Suicide Prevention

TermDefinition
Define suicide? Voluntary act of killing oneself, a fatal, self-inflicted destructive act with explicit or inferred intent to die, sometimes called suicide completion.
Define suicidality? All suicide related behaviors and thoughts of completing or attempting suicide and suicide ideation.
Define suicide attempt? Non-fatal, self-inflicted destructive act with explicit or implicit intent to die.
Define parasuicide? Voluntary, apparent attempt at suicide, commonly called a suicidal gesture, in which the aim is NOT death.
Define suicidal ideation? Thinking about and planning one's own death.
Population groups that have the highest rates for suicide? Males have a higher suicide completion rate four times more than females. White men most at risk especially older men.
What are key factors associated with suicide completion? If the patient has all the factors in the risk assessment. 1 Suicidal ideation 2 A plan 3 Severe with intent to carry out plan 4 Patient has the means (gun/pills) to carry out plan
What are three evidence-based interventions used to reduce imminent and ongoing suicide risk for your patient? 1. Reconnecting the patient to other people and instilling hope 2. Restoring emotional stability and reducing suicidal behavior 3. Ensuring safety
