Acids,Bases,Salts

TermDefinition
Acid (Arrhenius) An acid is a substance which yields hydrogen ions (H+) in solutions.
Acids (Bronsted-Lowry) An acid is a proton (H+) donor.
Acid (Lewis) An acid is an electron pair acceptor.
Base (Arrhenius) A base is a substance which yields hydroxide ions (OH-) in solutions.
Base (Bronsted-Lowry) A base is a proton (H+) acceptor.
Base (Lewis) A base is an electron pair donor.
Acid Anhydride A non-metallic oxide which reacts with water to produce an acid. E.g SO3(g) + H2O(l) --> H2SO4(aq)
Alkali A basic, ionic salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal. Also, It is a base that can be dissolves in water to produce hydroxide ions (OH-(aq)). E.g. NaOH(aq)--> Na+(aq) + OH-(aq
Salt A neutral product (consisting of a positive and negative (except OH-) ion) that is formed from a base and an acid.
Acid Oxide A non-metallic oxide that reacts with water to produce an acid. E.g. SO2, CO2,CO3
Basic Oxide A metallic oxide that reacts with water to produce a base. E.g. Na2O, CaO, MgO
Amphoteric Oxide A metallic oxide which displays characteristics of a base and an acid. It can react with both. E.g. ZnO, pbO ZnO reacts with NaOH as an acid and with HCl as a base.
Neutral Oxide One that does not form a salt with an acid or base. E.g Carbon Monoxide(CO), Nitrous monoxide(NO), Dinitrogen monoxide(N2O)
Acid A substance thay produces hydrogen ions (H+(aq)) in water
Neutralization When an acid reacts with a base to form salt and water.
Base An oxide/hydroxide of a metal.
Normal Salt It is formed when all the H+ ions in an acid are replaced by a metal/amnonium ions. E.g. 2KOH(aq) + H2SO4(aq) --> K2SO4(aq) + 2H2O(l)
Acid Salt It is formed when the H+ ions in an acid are partially replaced by a metal/ amnonium ions. E.g. 2KOH(aq) + H2SO4(aq) --> K2SO4(aq) + 2H2O(l)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
