Genres

Match the genre to the definition

science fiction A story that takes place in the future; it often includes science and technology
humor A story that is written to make readers laugh
realistic fiction A story that takes place in the present time; it includes events that COULD happen
Informational Writing that is true and factual; it often contains charts, diagrams, and photographs
Historical Fiction A fictional story that takes place in the past; often the setting is real but the characters are made up
Mystery A suspenseful story centered around a puzzling event; it includes clues
Fantasy A story that contains events that could NEVER happen in real life
Historical Nonfiction An informative writing about events that happened in the past
Drama A story that is acted out; it contains a script, stage directions, and dialogue
Fable A short story, often with talking animals; used to teach a moral lesson
Autobiography A story written by a person in which he tells about his own life
Tall Tale A funny story where characters and events are exaggerated
Fairy Tale A type of folk tale that often includes magic, fairies, dragons, and a happy ending
Biography A story about a person's life written by another person
Poetry Verse written to create a response of thought and feeling in the reader
Myth A very old story that often tells how something in the world came to be
Legend A type of folk tale based on a real person or event, but it cannot be proven
Folk Tale A type of fiction that includes old stories passed down from generation to generation
