Poetry and some common figures of speech

| figurative language | language that means something other than its literal meaning and expresses ideas in vivid ways | similes, metaphor, imagery, onomatopoeia and more |

| personification | giving human feelings and actions to non-human things | Fog by Carl Sandburg, The fog comes on little cat fee. It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on. |
| metaphor | compares two different things without the words "like" or "as." | Jordan was a tornado of emotions. |
| onomatopoeia | words or the use of words with sounds | Pow, Bank, Kapow |
| poem | a piece of writing that stands out based on its use of language, form, rhythm, etc. This type of writing can be short or long and may rhyme | Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete? | rhyme scheme | the pattern of rhymes in a poem or song, usually at the ends of lines. Sometimes indicated by letters that show which lines rhyme, like abab | Still I rise by Maya Angalou ...Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise.... |
| simile | compares two things using "like" or "as." | She was as quiet as a mouse. |
| imagery | figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. | Tip toeing through the dark, the smell of apples lingered in the air, a bursting light ignites a burst of cold, the gasp released was quickly replaced by a smile as eyes spied the last of the chocolate cake |
| juxtaposition | arrangement of two or more things for the purpose of comparison | All's fair in love and war |
| alliteration | the repetition of the same sound at the starts of words or phrases that are close together. | Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. |
