Poetry and some common figures of speech

rhyme scheme the pattern of rhymes in a poem or song, usually at the ends of lines. Sometimes indicated by letters that show which lines rhyme, like abab Still I rise by Maya Angalou ...Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise....
simile compares two things using "like" or "as." She was as quiet as a mouse.
imagery figurative language to represent objects, actions, and ideas in such a way that it appeals to our physical senses. Tip toeing through the dark, the smell of apples lingered in the air, a bursting light ignites a burst of cold, the gasp released was quickly replaced by a smile as eyes spied the last of the chocolate cake
juxtaposition arrangement of two or more things for the purpose of comparison All's fair in love and war
alliteration the repetition of the same sound at the starts of words or phrases that are close together. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
