Math Terms 1

Words we will use in math this year

TermDefinition
digit any of the numbers 0 to 9
unit a place on the place value chart. For example, ones, tens, hundreds, etc.
multiply to find a total from a number of equal groups
divide to split up a total into equal groups
number sentence a math problem with an equal sign and answer. For example, 3 + 4 = 7
value what a number represents based according to its place value
expanded form example, 135 = (1 x 100) + (3 x 10) + (5 x 1)
standard form a number written in the format: 135
word form example, one hundred thirty-five
exponent tells us how many times a number is to be used in a multiplication sentence
