Rigid Transformation
8th grade Unit 1 vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Rotation | A turn around a center point. Does not change size or shape. |
| Translation | A slide that does not change size or shape. |
| Reflection | A flip over a line like a mirror image. Does not change size or shape. |
| Describe Rotation | Direction, degree, and center of rotation. |
| Describe Translation | Direction and distance |
| Describe Reflection | Line of reflection |
| Center of rotation | A point that a figure rotates around |
| Clockwise | rotating right |
| Counterclockwise | rotating left |
| Line of reflection | a line that a figure reflects over |
| Image | The result of a shape after a transformation |
| Rigid Transformation | Rotation, Reflection, and Translation. Does not change side length measurements or angle measurements. |
| Corresponding point | A location on the original figure and its image that they have in common. |
| Sequence of Transformations | More than one transformation happening |
| Reflection over x-axis | x-coordinate stays the same, the y-coordinate changes to its opposite. (x, y) -> (x, -y) |
| Reflection over y-axis | y-coordinate stays the same, the x-coordinate changes to its opposite. (x, y) -> (-x, y) |
| Vertical Angles | Angles that are equal and can perform a 180 degree rotation around the shared vertex of the angles. |
| Alternate Interior Angles | In between parallel lines, on opposite sides of the transversal, and NOT supplementary |
| Transversal | A line that passes through two other lines to create angle relationships |
| Supplementary Angles | Angles where the sum of the angles equal 180 degrees |
