Geometry Unit1 Vocab

TermDefinition
What is the definition of scale factor of a dilation? Describes the extent of a dilation. The ratio of a length on the image to a corresponding length on the preimage.
What is the definition of order of symmetry? The number of times a figure maps onto itself as it rotates from 0 to 360 degrees.
What is the definition of magnitude of symmetry? The smallest angle through which a figure can be rotated so that it maps onto itself.
What is the definition of invariant points? The set of points that does not move under a transformation.
What is the definition of angle of rotation? The angle through which a rotation is performed.
What is the definition of reflectional symmetry? Symmetry where a figure can be mapped onto itself by a reflection in a line.
What is the definition of line of reflection? The line over which a reflection is performed.
What is the definition of reflection? Also known as a flip, a transformation over a line. Each point of the preimage and its image are the same distance from that line.
What is the definition of transformation? An operation that maps an original image onto a new figure.
What is the definition of center of rotation? The point around which a rotation is performed.
What is the definition of line of symmetry? A line that can be drawn through a plane figure so that the figure on one side is a reflection of the figure on the opposite side.
What is the definition of similarity transformation? A transformation that produces an image that is similar to the preimage.
What is the definition of glide reflection? A composition of a translation followed by a reflection in a line parallel to the translation vector.
What is the definition of image? The figure that results from a transformation.
What is the definition of preimage? The original image before a transformation.
What is the definition of rotation? Also known as a turn, a transformation around a fixed point, through a specific angle, and in a specific direction.
What is the definition of Rotational Symmetry? Symmetry where a figure can be mapped onto itself by a rotation between 0 and 36 degrees about the center of the figure.
What is the definition of isometry? A transformation in which the position of the image may differ from that of the preimage, but the two figures remain congruent.
What is the definition of Enlargement? A dilation with a scale factor greater than 1. The image is larger than the preimage.
What is the definition of center of symmetry? The point about which a figure is rotationally symmetrical.
What is the definition of translation? Also known as a slide, a transformation that moves all points of the original figure the same distance in the same direction.
What is the definition of congruence transformation? A transformation in which the position of the image may differ from that of the preimage, but the two figures remain congruent.
What is the definition of center of dilation? The fixed point that dilations are performed in relation to.
What is the definition of dilation? A transformation that enlarges or reduces the original figure proportionally.
What is the definition of reduction? A dilation with a scale factor between 0 and 1. The image is smaller than the preimage.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
